  • Talks begin over possible takeover
  • Reynolds and McElhenney success offers blueprint
  • WHAT HAPPENED?

The former Take That star was last week named president of the League One side and was in the stands as Vale fell to a late defeat to leaders Portsmouth on Saturday. Parallels have been drawn with Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney's adventures across the border in north Wales and it appears that conversations have been quietly taking place around a possible takeover.

    WHAT CLEMMIE MOODIE SAID

A source has told : "It’s really early days, but Robbie’s been formally approached to see if he’s interested in fronting a bid. Port Vale remains one of his greatest loves, and it’s always been a dream to be more involved. He’s had a couple of meetings, and his backers are incredibly excited. They feel Robbie would add the star quality, and make Port Vale a major player. “Seeing what Ryan and Rob have done with Wrexham – the increased footfall, merchandise sales and general profile build – is inspiring. Port Vale fans love Robbie and, on paper, it’s a match made in heaven.”

    THE GOSSIP

Wrexham's success and momentum under their California-based ownership offers a glimpse of what is possible if takeovers are handled well, with the added element in this scenario of a lifelong fan helping lead a club to a new level. Instant progress may be harder to come by in this case with Port Vale already competing in an ultra-competitive division against a number of clubs with big budgets and major aspirations.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

Port Vale holds the record for the most seasons played in the English Football League without ever featuring in the top flight. In 112 campaigns Vale have never fallen out of the league. Their glory days actually coincided with the emergence of Williams and Take That when they enjoyed two spells in what is now the Championship and won a Football League Trophy at Wembley.
